Winter Surfing Gains Popularity

It’s rare to see anyone hanging out on Lake Superior this time of year, especially when it’s -30 degrees outside. But apparently there’s a handful of dedicated (insane) Minnesotans who get a kick out surfing the waves in the dead of winter.
In January, the New York Times covered these guys – about 40 in all – about their unwavering passion for surfing.
“Surfing in a snowstorm may sound like a direct route toward hypothermia or certain death. But on Lake Superior, where surfers ride all months of the year, thick wet suits, gloves, hoods, booties and petroleum jelly smudged on exposed skin all form a protective shell against the crushing cold encountered by wave catchers in what is one of the world’s most unlikely surfing scenes.”
Apparently, people come from all over the country to try out our lake, and according to the Times, fresh water surfing is gaining popularity around the country.
Lake Superior has no significant tides or currents, making surfing a rare and coveted event. These riders obsessively check weather patterns waiting for the perfect conditions to head to the water.
“You have to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice,” said surfer Bob Tema, to the Times. Only 10 days a year are surfable, and two of those considered “good quality”.
