RIP Sarah Burkeby Cara Pettersen
An untimely and tragic death for Sarah Burke, a competitive freestyle skier from Canada. Our condolences go out the her family, friends and fans.
Sarah was injured January 10th, nine days prior to passing away. She was training in Utah on the same pipe that, oddly enough, injured Kevin Pearce in 2009 (the Eagle Superpipe at Park City Mountain Resort in Utah). Sarah's tragic fall caused her brain to bleed and her to go into cardiac arrest. Crew on the scene performed CPR and life flighted her to the nearest hospital. The Winter X Games champion and 2005 half-pipe world gold medalist suffered "severe irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest," according to a statement from her publicist.
If you are not familiar with Sarah Burke, she was a bad ass. She was a veteran freestyle, superpipe skier and advocate. Sarah lobbied for superpipe skiing to be included in the 2014 Sochi Olympics and won! The 2014 Sochi Olympics will be the first to host superpipe skiing. Sarah was poised to place well in the up coming Olympics, even favored for gold.
Sarah was 29 years young and will be greatly missed.
