East Coast skateboarders and BMX riders will have something to look forward to this summer. In January, ground was broken on a 750-foot-long, 40,000-square-foot, million dollar skateplaza project in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, that may be considered the new standard for skateplazas.
Featuring urban landscape elements like ledges, staircases and benches in a park-like setting, the Skateplaza will cater to all skill levels from novice to advanced. The design was created to mimic various skate spots from around the world including New York City, Los Angeles and Barcelona. Both skateboarders and BMXers can ride in a safe, legal environment, plus non-riders can enjoy passive space for viewing.
A project that has taken years to come to fruition, those involved from the architectural and landscape planning to the design and engineering are incredibly excited for the completion of Phase One scheduled for July 2010.

Funding has come from Pennsylvania state grants and monies set aside from a Bethlehem community projects account. Additional money was raised during local skateboard and BMX demos and video release events as well as an outpour of support from not only riders themselves but like-minded community members and businesses who have realized the need for this kind of facility.
WIth anything, of course there are the naysayers especially during recent tough economic times, but Homebase Skateshop owner Andrew Po, who has spearheaded the project, has not let them bring him down. Additional help is needed, however, in order to complete Phase 2. Learn how by visiting www.bethlehemskateplaza.com.
Finally, a destination spot for riders on the East Coast! By the way, the area is bustling with great boutique shopping, restaurants for all tastes and palates and a casino if you’re into gambling.
