Any Day Parade

ADP FRAMED

Melissa Ann Jackson, AKA Tree, lead vocals and guitar of Any Day Parade had some time to kill with BettyLife.

The music of Any Day Parade is described by Tree as “Johnny Cash meets The Clash with Dolly Parton and Townes Van Zandt dueting.” If that sounds like a trainwreck then try imagining the genre as “a little bit country, a little bit rock -just like the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard (RIP Lil’ Baby Jesus).” The band has been together one fresh year, forming in December of 2008.

The name “Any Day Parade” came to Tree as she was driving through West Virginia on her way home to Kentucky. “I was at the time in a previous project with band mates Joe Daly and Larry Brinkman (of ADP). The name wasn’t ready for us just yet.” Born and raised in the Midwest she rocks her “Kentucky tattoo with justification.” Members of the band hail from different parts of the eastern seaboard and met while playing in other bands in NYC. “Larry and I met while working together at a record store in Jersey City. Joe and Chuck Daly are brothers who’ve been playing together and active members of the Jersey City experience for a while. Alcohol and music really brought us all together.”

Tree has an amazingly distinct voice in which she’s been fine tuning since a young age. “I’ve been singing since I could talk, maybe before. My folks had us in church 3 to 4 days a week. Being able to sing out loud, really loud was probably one of about 3 things I liked about church. We weren’t allowed to listen to ‘secular’ music so I listened to a lot
of gospel- country and traditional southern Baptist gospel.” Tree’s inspirations with music started with a Credence Clearwater Revival CD purchased at a yard sale before even owning a CD player. “As I grew older, I started into rebel rock. I loved the raw emotion of the songs, the energy and the belting of the vocals. The vocal melodies channeled so much feeling they borderlined painful- a beautiful, excruciating pain.”
Adding to the earlier influences of “Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley and Emmylou Harris, I was able to find my voice.”

Music has always been a passion for Tree and has been playing the guitar since an early age. “Music was always the 7th member in our house. I started playing guitar around 10 with my Dad. He was always strumming a guitar.”

Any Day Parade isn’t the first band Tree has played with. Remembering her first gig, Tree “was 18. It was an all ages show in Lexington Ky. At the Wrocklage. It was excellent. I was bright eyed and bushy tailed and they served me drinks.”

Being a female in a male dominated industry has it’s advantages. “I think at my level and within Any Day Parade it has more advantages for us. We offer a lot of options for the listener having the mix of female and male vocals and I think that makes us a little sexier for the industry…and by sexier I mean really sexier.”

The band works together to “bring in songs or ideas and then we each add our own voices to the songs. It most definitely is a joint effort. Chuck Richard’s (drummer) voice is very present especially in the arranging of our songs.” The inspiration for the lyrics come from an “Easy-drinking, living and Loving” lifestyle.

Future plans for ADP include new tunes and a summer tour.
“We have recently added a new member to Any Day Parade. Chuck Daly (bass) had his first gig with us New Years Eve. In the immediate we are going be writing new songs and incorporating his sound into ours. We are mastering another Self Produced EP and have a summer tour in the works.”

When Tree isn’t playing music, she’s “drinking at the bar waiting to
play a show.” Her advice to young female artists, “use birth control.”

Soon you’ll be able to pick up Any Day Parade on ITunes but until then, mail order through myspace or hit them up for an autographed copy at their shows.

Upcoming show at Murph’s Bar, Philadelphia PA 31 January 2009, Court Tavern, New Brunswick NJ 28 February 2009

Black or White Q and A:

Whiskey or Pabst Blue Ribbon?
If I’m off work the next day I’d say Bourbon. If I have to work, PBR.

Leather or Fur?
Leather. Fur is weird.

Meat or potato?
Shepherd’s Pie.

Electric or Acoustic?
Electric right now, it’s early and I’m trying to wake up.

New kids on the block or the Spice Girls?
Does picking Donnie Wahlberg make my chance for meeting Mark Wahlberg better?
